And some background about the original Mr. Fantastic:

Mr. Fantastic, better known as Reed Richards, makes up one quarter or the Fantastic Four. In college Reed met and became roommates with Benjamin Grimm (to be known later as, The Thing). At the time, Reed was working on a starship capable of traveling in hyperspace and Ben jokingly volunteered to pilot the craft.

Later Reed moved to a boarding house in Manhattan to continue his studies at Columbia University. It was at this boarding house, owned by the aunt of Susan Storm, that Reed first met Sue. Somewhat to his chagrin at the time, Sue instantly fell in love with him.

Years later, his academic studies completed, Reed began using his inheritance and government grants to fund his research. Still determined to reach the stars, Reed's project began in earnest in Central City. Sue moved to the area and soon found herself engaged to Richards. Reed's old roommate, Ben, had gone on to become a successful test pilot and, true to his word, agreed to pilot the craft for Reed.

Everything was going well until the government threatened to cut funding and cancel the project. Desperate, Reed, Ben, Sue and Johnny (Sue's younger brother) decided to sneak aboard the ship and launch immediately. They hadn't completed all of the testing of the ship, but Reed was confident they'd be safe. But as they passed through the Van Allen Belt the ship was bombarded with nearly lethal doses of cosmic radiation. The cosmic rays wrecked havoc on the ship's insufficient shielding, and the group was forced to return to Earth immediately.

The ship landed safely on Earth again, but the group discovered almost instantly that they'd all been mutated in one fashion or another. Reed's skin, bone and muscle structure became highly malleable, and he discovered that he could elongate any portion of his body at will! Reed eventually convinced the others to join together and use their powers to benefit mankind -- thus they became, The Fantastic Four.
